Remedies for an Emergency Reflux Attack

Acid reflux, also referred to as heartburn and GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), is a condition in which stomach acid travels back up into the esophagus. This causes a very painful burning sensation in the chest and throat, and sometimes spontaneous acid regurgitation. If you are a frequent acid reflux sufferer, you know how important it is to have fast relief on hand. Keep some of these remedies around to try the next time you are experiencing an acid reflux attack.
  1. Fennel Seeds

    • Fennel seeds are a good thing to keep on hand in case of an acid reflux attack. The anethole in fennel seeds helps reduce gastrointestinal spasms that lead to acid reflux and other digestive problems. Chew about 1 tsp. of fennel seeds when heartburn occurs or, to prevent acid reflux, chew after every meal.

    Apple Cider Vinegar

    • Another fast-acting remedy for acid reflux is apple cider vinegar. Although it is acidic, apple cider vinegar can actually help reduce stomach acidity by balancing the pH of the stomach. You can either drink a couple of spoonfuls straight or add them to half a glass of water.

    Almonds

    • Many people find that almonds can offer quick relief from an attack of acid reflux. Try eating a small handful of raw, unsalted almonds after meals or when acid reflux begins.

    Apples

    • Eating an apple is another way to deal with an acid reflux attack, as apples neutralize acid. Just reach for an apple when heartburn occurs and be sure to chew thoroughly. Raw carrots and potatoes will also neutralize stomach acid.

    Milk

    • Milk can also help bring fast relief from heartburn or acid reflux pain. Believers in this remedy cannot seem to agree on whether whole milk or skim milk is best to drink for this purpose, but either one should be able to provide relief.

    Papaya

    • Papaya is a quick and effective remedy for a sudden heartburn problem. The enzymes in papaya help put your stomach back in balance and calm acid reflux. Papaya enzyme tablets are available in most health-food stores. These are convenient for carrying with you wherever you go.
