Instant Relief of GERD
GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, is a bothersome condition that develops because the lower esophageal sphincter does not work properly, allowing food and stomach juices back into the esophagus. The most common symptoms are heartburn and chest pain, although some people may also experience a cough, sore throat and difficulty swallowing. Several medications--both prescription and over-the-counter--are available to treat GERD. Some are long-term maintenance drugs to prevent and control symptoms, but others are designed to treat acute symptoms.-
Antacids
-
Common over-the-counter antacids such as Tums, Rolaids, Mylanta and Maalox can provide quick relief from the heartburn and burning sensation that typically accompany GERD. These medications neutralize stomach acid, which is one of the causes of the burning pain. Although antacids will provide some quick relief, they do not treat the inflammation to the esophagus that GERD causes. Avoid taking too many antacids because of the risk of experiencing bothersome symptoms such as diarrhea and constipation.
H-2 Receptor Blockers
-
Another type of medication that can provide relief from the heartburn caused by GERD is called an H-2 receptor blocker. It works similar to an antacid. H-2 receptor blockers take a little longer than antacids to provide relief, but they control heartburn for a longer period of time. Over-the-counter H-2 blockers include Tagamet, Pepcid, Axid and Zantac. If you try these drugs and do not have relief, your doctor may be able to prescribe a stronger H-2 blocker. Keep in mind, though, that not all GERD sufferers experience relief from these drugs. They are only effective in about half of patients, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Home Remedies
-
In addition to prescription and over-the-counter medications, there are several home remedies you can try to provide some quick relief from GERD. Add a 1/2 tsp. of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water and drink it while eating meals. This will help prevent the irritation to the esophageal lining that causes pain. Another good remedy is ginger root, which can absorb stomach acid. The best way to use ginger root to treat GERD is to buy ginger root capsules from a health food or nutritional supplement store. Take a capsule after dinner or eating a large meal to prevent heartburn from developing. If you do not want to take the capsules to prevent GERD symptoms, take one when you feel heartburn developing to get some relief.
