How to Ease Persistent Heartburn
Heartburn is a common symptom of indigestion and the most common symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It causes an uncomfortable burning sensation in the chest and seems to worsen when you are in certain positions, like lying down or bending over. Fortunately, many self-care measures can help relieve heartburn and are vital for successful management. If you have not already been diagnosed with GERD or another medical condition, see your doctor if your heartburn is significantly interfering with daily living to determine if a more serious condition exists.Instructions

1
Quit smoking. If you find it difficult to quit on your own, ask your doctor for guidance. He can advise you of medications, cessation programs and other means of assistance.
-
2
Do not eat large amounts of food at one time. Spread your food intake out into smaller meals throughout the day.
-
3
Avoid rich, fatty foods, spicy foods, full fat dairy, carbonated drinks, citrus fruits and drinks and caffeine. These are the most common offenders for heartburn but this list is not exhaustive. You might find other foods cause problems for you. Keeping track of what you eat and when symptoms manifest can help you figure out your personal triggers.

4
Use over-the-counter medications that counteract stomach acid (Maalox, Tums), reduce acid formation (Tagamet, Pepcid) and promote esophageal tissue healing (Prilosec and Prevacid) as directed on the product label.
-
5
Lose excess weight. Extra pounds increase pressure and promote the flow of acid back up the esophagus.
-
6
Do not wear clothes that fit tightly around the stomach.

7
Use natural supplements that promote gastrointestinal health. The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests the following treatments. You should consult with your doctor or a health care professional knowledgeable about natural treatments before using them on your own. They include probiotics, melatonin (2 to 6 mg before bed) and l-glutamine (1,000 mg three times a day). Probiotics come in a variety of forms; take your chosen supplement as directed on the product label.

Talk to your doctor if lifestyle modifications and over-the-counter medications are not relieving your symptoms. He might suggest prescription strength versions of the above mentioned medications or other types of drugs that can ease your symptoms.
