Zegerid is the brand name of a prescription medication that is a combination of omerprazole and sodium bicarbonate. Doctors typically prescribe Zegerid for the treatment of gastrointestinal conditions.

    • Zegerid works by disrupting the process of acid production in your stomach by affecting the mechanism that secretes the acid.

    Effects

    • By interrupting the process of acid production, Zegerid decreases the amount of acid in your stomach.

    Benefits

    • Doctors prescribe Zegerid to treat gastrointestinal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and esophageal erosion. Zegerid is also effective at preventing gastrointestinal bleeding in people who are at risk for the condition.

    Time Frame

    • In most cases, prescribed Zegerid treatment is for 4 to 8 weeks, as this is enough time for symptoms to stop and any irritation to heal. In some cases, Zegerid is taken for up to 1 year to prevent the return of esophageal erosion.

    Considerations

    • Because the effects of Zegerid on fetal development are unknown, doctors rarely prescribe Zegerid for use in pregnant women. In addition, Zegerid may not be considered safe for children.
