Side Effects of the Drug Pepcid

Pepcid---also known by its generic name, famotidine---is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease and other heartburn-causing conditions. It is a histamine H2-receptor antagonist that helps prevent excess stomach acid. As with most medications, some users of Pepcid have reported side effects.
  1. Severe Side Effects

    • If you experience a pounding heartbeat, confusion, seizure, numbness, easy bruising or jaundice while taking Pepcid, discontinue use and seek medical attention immediately.

    Minor Side Effects

    • Some minor side effects of Pepcid include insomnia, muscle pain, headache, nausea, vomiting, constipation, fatigue and diarrhea. These side effects are rare.

    Warnings

    • Do not take Pepcid if you are allergic to Zantac or Tagamet. Consult your physician about using Pepcid if you have liver or kidney disease, stomach cancer or breathing problems such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). If you are nursing, be aware that Pepcid has been shown to be present in breast milk.

    Drug Interactions

    • Drugs that have been shown to negatively interact with Pepcid include anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and Aleve, as well as itraconazole (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral) and atazanavir (Reyataz).

    Overdose

    • Symptoms of Pepcid overdose include fainting, increased heart rate, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and stomach pain; seek professional medical assistance immediately.
