Meds for Stomach Pain

Stomach pain can be a bothersome condition, but there are quite a few self-treatment options that may help to relieve stomach pain. However, chronic stomach pain may be caused by a serious condition and may require the treatment of a physician.
  1. Types

    • There are several types of medications that may be used in non-ulcer stomach pain. They include antacids such as Maalox and Mylanta, which are common treatments for indigestion and heartburn. Antacids work by neutralizing stomach acid and providing fast pain relief. Medications such as Zantac and Tagamet work by decreasing the amount of acid produced by the stomach.

    Types

    • Aciphex and Nexium are proton pump inhibitors. This means they work by shutting down the acid "pumps" in the stomach. These medications are taken orally or by IV.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Antidepressants have been prescribed to ward off stomach pain. Paxil, Prozac and Sarafem are all useful in controlling stomach pain when used in low doses. These medicines work by inhibiting the activity of neurons that control intestinal pain and discomfort.

    Warning

    • Chronic stomach pain can be the cause of a serious condition such as an ulcer or an H. pylori infection. The H. pylori infection requires antibiotics such as Amoxicillin, Biaxin or Sumycin.

    Warning

    • If stomach pain persists and is not relieved by over-the-counter medications, it could be a sign of a serious condition. It is important to seek the advice of a health care professional if pain continues.
