Prevacid is the brand name for lansoprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces stomach acid. It has been available over the counter since 2009.
Minor Side Effects

Uncommonly, some people experience side effects when taking Prevacid. These include dry mouth, headaches, abdominal pain, nausea and constipation or diarrhea.
Time Frame

Prevacid is intended for treatment lasting eight weeks or less. Taking PPIs for over a year is associated with a significantly increased risk of hip fractures in people aged 50 years and older. Long-term use also is associated with colitis.
Contraindication

People with liver disease may not be able to safely take Prevacid. These people should talk with their doctor before using proton pump inhibitor medication.
Drug Interactions

Prevacid interacts with many other drugs. These include certain antibiotics, anticoagulants, heart medications, iron supplements, protease inhibitors and drugs used to treat respiratory disorders.
