What Foods Shouldn't I Eat If I Have Acid Reflux?
-
Trigger Foods
-
Several foods are known to worsen acid reflux and heartburn. These include onions, garlic, mint, whole milk, cream soups, oils, chocolate, and fatty or fried foods. Alcoholic, carbonated and caffeinated beverages, along with tea and citrus juices, can make heartburn worse. Symptoms might worsen after eating spicy foods or acidic foods such as tomatoes. When you notice symptoms, think about what you most recently ate.
What To Eat
-
It's easy for people with acid reflux to follow the food guide pyramid's recommendations for a healthy diet as long as they avoid certain foods in each food group. For example, most fruits and vegetables will not irritate reflux symptoms, but citrus should be avoided. And when eating dairy products, it's best to avoid those containing whole milk. Some people find it's best to eat smaller meals more frequently. Eating larger meals can cause the stomach to distend and make food reflux back into the esophagus. Finally, many people notice their symptoms are worse lying down. In this case, try not to eat within two hours before going to bed.
Other Triggers
-
There are a few non-food things that can irritate the esophagus in people with acid reflux. Smoking can make the esophageal sphincter function less effectively. Avoid chewing gum or sucking hard candy, because it can increase the amount of saliva that is swallowed, which creates more reflux. It's also a good idea for people with reflux to shed any excess pounds.
