Can You Get a Sore Throat With Acid Reflux?

Acid reflux can cause a number of painful symptoms. Sore throats can often be attributed to excess stomach acid.

  1. Acid Reflux

    • Acid reflux is a term used to describe the leaking of stomach acid into the throat. This can be a painful condition.

    Causes

    • Reflux can be caused by a weakening of the valve that normally keeps stomach acid out of the throat. It can also be caused by an excessive amount of acid in the stomach.

    Sore Throat

    • Stomach acid is not meant to come into contact with the throat, and when it does, it can cause a great deal of pain and irritation. Reflux laryngitis is the term given to an irritation of the larynx caused by stomach acid.

    Other Symptoms

    • According to the Alaska Native Medical Center, other symptoms of acid reflux are excessive mucus in the throat, a foul taste, chronic cough and shortness of breath.

    Treatment

    • A sore throat is treated with over-the-counter pain medications, such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen. The pain can also be soothed by sucking on ice chips.
      Acid reflux is treated with both over-the-counter and prescription medications such as Zantac and Prilosec.
