Remedy for Heart Burn
Heartburn is a common digestive problem that is characterized by a burning sensation in the chest. The condition occurs when acid from your stomach enters the esophagus. Although heartburn can be quite uncomfortable, it can be easily managed by making some lifestyle changes or by using over-the-counter medications.-
Lifestyle Changes
-
The first step in eliminating heartburn is to avoid the foods that are causing it. If you notice that certain foods or drinks such as alcohol or spicy food trigger a case of heartburn, avoid these foods. According to FamilyDoctor.org, carbonated beverages, tomatoes, citrus fruits, peppermints and chocolate can trigger heartburn. Eat smaller portions. Instead of eating a few large meals each day, eat several smaller meals.
If you're overweight, work on shedding some excess pounds. According to the Mayo Clinic, excess weight puts pressure on your stomach, which causes acid to back up into the esophagus. Wearing tight fitting clothing can also place extra pressure on your stomach. Avoid wearing pants with overly tight waistbands.
According to FamilyDoctor.org, heartburn can be make worse by smoking and laying down after eating. After eating, wait at least two hours before taking a nap or going to bed.
Antacids and Medications
-
Antacids are a short-term remedy to ease heartburn pain. They are available over the counter and work by neutralizing stomach acid. Avoid taking more than the recommended dosage of antacids, as they could cause constipation or diarrhea. If your heartburn is severe enough, your doctor can prescribe medications called H-2 receptor blockers that reduce the amount of acid your stomach produces. H-2 receptors don't take effect as quickly as antacids, but they provide longer-lasting relief.
Other Remedies
-
According to the Mayo Clinic, stress and anxiety can make heartburn worse. If you're stressed out, find something that will help you relax. Consider taking a walk or engaging in another form of gentle exercises, listening to music, meditating or getting a massage.
