Uses for Nexium
Nexium (esomeprazole sodium) is a prescription medication classified as a proton pump inhibitor. Manufactured by AstraZeneca pharmaceuticals, the medication is indicated for alleviating heartburn symptoms and healing the esophageal damage that long-term heartburn can create. It is approved for used in treating GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux disease), healing Erosive Esophagitis, reducing the risk of gastric ulcers, short-term pediatric use and as a treatment component to eradicate H. pylori (Helicobacter pylori).-
GERD Treatment
-
GERD, also commonly referred to as acid reflux disease, is characterized by the occurrence of heartburn symptoms at least two days per week for several months. The problem occurs when the valve which divides your esophagus from your stomach (esophageal sphincter) fails to properly close. As a result, stomach acid can flow into the esophagus, causing uncomfortable symptoms and increasing the risk of esophageal damage.
Symptoms include burning pain, regurgitation and difficulty swallowing. GERD can also cause asthma, persistent cough and a hoarse or raspy voice.
The recommended Nexium dosage is 20 mg per day for four weeks.
Treating Erosive Esophagitis
-
GERD can cause Erosive Esophagitis, a condition characterized by inflammation and pain in the esophagus. Over time, as your esophagus is exposed to stomach acid, irritation and damage occurs. In some cases, bleeding can occur with blood being visible in vomit or in your stool. In the advanced stages of EE, you are at risk of developing esophageal cancer or a condition called Barrett's Esophagus. Barrett's Esophagus (BE) is a condition characterized by cellular abnormalities in the esophagus, which put you at greater risk of developing cancer of the esophagus.
For healing EE, the recommended dosage is 20 to 40 mg once daily for a period of four to eight weeks. For EE maintenance the recommended dosage is 20 mg per day.
Treating Gastric Ulcers
-
Nexium use can heal esophageal damage and decrease the risk of developing a gastric ulcer--occurring in the stomach--and the risk of recurrent gastric ulcers.
Ulcer symptoms include abdominal pain and a deep, dull ache that occurs on and off for days or even weeks. The pain usually recurs within several hours of eating or when your stomach is empty, and is alleviated by eating and/or antacids.
The recommended dosage of Nexium is 20 to 40 mg per day for as long as six months.
Pediatric Use
-
Nexium is safe for short-term relief of pediatric GERD symptoms and EE. It is indicated for patients older than 1. Dosages range from 10 mg to 40 mg depending on the age of the patient and severity of the symptoms.
H. pylori Treatment
-
H. pylori is a kind of bacteria that creates a significantly increased risk of developing an ulcer. Once infected, the bacteria affect the delicate lining that protects your stomach and makes it more susceptible to damage from stomach acid. Nexium, used in addition to clarithromycin and amoxicillin, is effective in eliminating the H. pylori bacteria and reducing the associated risks. The recommended dosage of Nexium is 40 mg per day for 10 days.
