Medicine for Heartburn & Acid Refllux
Heartburn is a digestive disturbance that affects everyone from time to time. GERD (gastroesophegeal reflux disease) is a chronic condition where stomach acids travel back up the esophagus and irritates the stomach lining causing chronic heartburn and acid reflux. Many over-the-counter treatments can address symptoms but in some cases, prescription medications might be necessary.-
Antacids
-
Antacids neutralize stomach acid and can provide fast-acting relief but this relief does not last as long as other treatments. Common brands include Maalox, Mylanta, Gelusil, Rolaids and Tums
Medications to Decrease Acid Production
-
H-2 receptor blockers reduce acid production. In comparison to antacids, they work more slowly but provide longer periods of relief. H-2 receptors are available in both over-the-counter and prescription strength and include Tagamet HB, Pepcid AC, Axid AR and Zantac 75.
Medications That Control Acid and Heal the Esophagus
-
Proton pump inhibitors stop acid production which encourages damaged tissue to repair itself. Prilosec and Prevacid are available in prescription and over-the-counter form. Medications available only by prescription include Nexium, Protonix and Aciphex.
Medications for the Lower Esophageal Sphincter
-
Prokinetic agents aid the stomach in emptying its contents more quickly and tightens the valve between the stomach and esophagus which helps keep acid from going back up the esophagus. These medications cause a number of side effects including fatigue, depression, anxiety and other neurological problems that make them undesirable treatment options.
Lifestyle Suggestions
-
Certain modifications in lifestyle can go a long way in complementing medication or even reducing or eliminating the need for them.
Lose excess weight that exerts pressure on the abdomen causing acid to move back up the esophagus. Do not wear clothes that fit tightly around the waist; they put pressure on the abdomen and the lower esophageal sphincter. Avoid foods that you know trigger heartburn; this is easier said than done but one of the most powerful strategies. Eat smaller meals throughout the day instead of a few big ones and wait at least two to three hours after eating to lie down or go to sleep. Elevating the head of your bed can also help.
