Side Effects of Maalox
Maalox is an over-the-counter antacid medicine, available in different versions including chewable tablets, liquid and anti-gas, with the ingredients aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide and simethicone. Maalox Max Quick Dissolve contains calcium carbonate and simethicone, while Maalox anti-diarrheal contains loperamide.-
Constipation and Diarrhea
-
Aluminum hydroxide can cause constipation, while magnesium hydroxide can cause diarrhea. The ingredients are combined to prevent these side effects, but either of these effects may still occur, with diarrhea being most likely.
Constipation as Severe Effect
-
Calcium carbonate and loperamide also can cause constipation. Although unlikely, patients taking any type of Maalox and experiencing constipation with bloating, severe abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting should seek medical attention.
Rare Side Effects
-
Some other rare side effects associated with Maalox products also call for medical attention. These include confusion, headache, increased thirst, changes in urination, fatigue, mood changes, muscle pain, vision changes, slow reflexes and weakness.
Aluminum Concerns
-
People with chronic kidney failure should not take Maalox products containing aluminum. Additionally, these products can result in subtle aluminum poisoning if taken excessively over long time frames.
Allergic Reaction
-
All Maalox medications have the potential to cause an allergic reaction. Signs are rash or hives, itching, difficulty breathing, and facial or mouth swelling.
