Side Effects of Rabeprazole

Rabeprazole is used to treat conditions caused by stomach acid, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and stomach ulcers. Available under the brand name Aciphex, it is in the category of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), which block the production of stomach acid. Side effects are uncommon.

    • Headache was the only side effect that occurred in more than 2 percent of people in clinical trials with rabeprazole, as detailed by eMedTV.

    Gastrointestinal Side Effects

    • Several gastrointestinal side effects are rarely associated with rabeprazole. These include constipation or diarrhea, increased or decreased appetite, stomach pain, upset stomach, nausea and vomiting.

    Other Side Effects

    • Other unlikely rabeprazole side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, insomnia, nervousness, water retention, and muscle or bone pain.

    Long-Term Use

    • A rare side effect with long-term use of over three years is vitamin B-12 deficiency, with symptoms of weakness, sore tongue, and numbness or tingling in the hands or feet.

    Drug Interactions

    • Because of possible drug interactions, rabeprazole should not be used while taking digoxin, ketoconazole or anticoagulants.
