Ranitidine Side Effects

Ranitidine is a medication used to reduce stomach acid in order to treat and prevent stomach ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Ranitidine is available over-the-counter, by prescription in higher strengths, in generic form and under the brand name Zantac. Numerous side effects are possible, but most are rarely experienced by users.

    • According to Medline Plus, the most common side effects associated with ranitidine occur in fewer than two percent of users. These include constipation or diarrhea, dizziness, headache, nausea and tiredness.

    Other Side Effects

    • People taking ranitidine may also experience abdominal pain, decreased sex drive, drowsiness and insomnia.

    Cardiovascular Side Effects

    • Cardiovascular side effects are extremely rare. Symptoms include rapid or slow heartbeat, and irregular heart rhythm.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Some people have an allergic reaction to ranitidine. They may develop a rash or hives, wheezing and difficulty breathing, and mouth or throat swelling.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Other rare serious side effects include confusion, depression and hallucinations. Liver problems can also occur, with symptoms of jaundice and dark urine.
