Nexium Instructions

Nexium is a prescription treatment for persistent heartburn and esophageal damage caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other gastrointestinal irritations. Nexium belongs to a class of drugs called proton pumped inhibitors, which reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach for up to 24 hours. Nexium is available in 20 mg and 40 mg delayed-release tablets and is not currently available in a generic version. By considering your symptoms and overall health, your doctor can determine if Nexium is an appropriate treatment for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the medication guide provided with your Nexium prescription thoroughly before beginning Nexium therapy. Discuss any questions or concerns about Nexium with your doctor or pharmacist.

    • 2

Swallow one Nexium capsule with a full glass of water (8 oz.) at least one hour before a meal. If you have difficulty swallowing capsules, a Nexium capsule may also be opened, sprinkled over applesauce and swallowed. Do not take more than one capsule daily unless instructed by a doctor.

    • 3

Wait at least three hours after taking Nexium before lying down. Nexium is not indicated for immediate relief of heartburn and may take this long to begin working.

    • 4

Avoid skipping doses of Nexium. If you skip a dose, take the next scheduled dose as normal and contact your doctor for further instructions.

    • 5

Continue taking Nexium for the entire length of time recommended by your doctor, even if your symptoms have improved. Nexium may begin to heal esophageal damage in four to eight weeks, but your doctor may recommend taking it long-term to prevent symptom recurrence. If your symptoms persist after you discontinue Nexium, contact your doctor.
