A host of foods have been identified as the culprits behind many acid reflux problems. These foods tend to be difficult to digest, cause the esophageal sphincter to relax or increase pressure on the stomach. Likewise, some people lack the stomach enzymes to digest certain foods, such as dairy. Try to avoid citrus fruits, red meat, chicken skin, chocolate, fried foods, sour cream, high-fat dairy, gravy, sugary foods, creamy salad dressings, pastas, tomatoes, onions and spicy foods. Avoid drinking coffee, tea or alcoholic beverages. Keep a food journal listing all the food that causes your acid reflux. It differs for each individual.

While the list of foods to avoid seem extensive, there are lots of foods you can enjoy. Incorporate into your meals foods such as apples, bananas, eggs, skinless chicken or turkey breast, shellfish, potatoes, green beans, cabbage, feta cheese, goat cheese, soy products, brown rice, whole wheat bread and fat-free cookies. For heartburn management, try juicing raw potatoes in a food juicer. Mix one equal part potato juice with one part water and drink three times a day. Instead of using spices like cayenne and chili powder, use garlic, salt, rosemary, thyme or oregano.

Avoid eating prior to a nap or bedtime to prevent the hydrochloric acid from escaping through the esophageal sphincter. Give yourself at least three hours before you lie down or keep your upper body upright. Try eating smaller meals throughout the day. Heavy meals tend to push the acid up. Stress plays a large part in causing heartburn. Make your meals a relaxing experience by putting on soothing music or avoiding serious conversations while eating. Maintain a low-impact workout routine that won't put pressure on your stomach. Walking, stretching and swimming are all great activities to stay in shape. Check out yoga classes or meditation.
