Mild Heat Stroke Symptoms

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric administration, about 175 people die from heat stroke in the United States each year. Most people do not realize that they are suffering from heat stroke until the symptoms become severe and possibly life threatening.
  1. Definition

    • Heat stroke is a condition that occurs when a person is exposed to the sun for a prolonged period of time and the body is unable to cool itself sufficiently.

    Risk Factors

    • Those at the highest risk to develop heat stroke are infants and young children, the elderly and those working outside during peak sunlight hours.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of mild heat stroke include headaches, dizziness, fatigue, disorientation and flushed skin. If untreated, a rapid heart beat, high body temperature and hallucinations can occur.

    Treatment

    • Treating mild heat stroke includes moving indoors and away from the hot sunlight. Apply cool water to the skin and lie down in a cool place with your feet elevated. Drink plenty of water to rehydrate your body.

    Prevention

    • To prevent mind heat stroke drink plenty of fluids while in the sun. Wearing lightweight, loose fitting clothes can help prevent getting overheated. Limit the amount of time that you spend outside during peak daylight hours.
