Four Signs of Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is a severe reaction that occurs when the body becomes overheated. If it is not recognized and treated quickly, it can become life-threatening. It often occurs when exercising or working in extreme heat, and is exacerbated by not taking in adequate fluids.
  1. Identification

    • Heat stroke occurs when the body becomes so overheated and dehydrated that the body stops sweating and loses its ability to cool itself; the temperature of the body rises above 104 degrees F.

    Cardiovascular Signs

    • With heat stroke the heartbeat becomes rapid. The blood pressure may be elevated or abnormally low.

    The Skin

    • The skin is usually red, hot and dry during heat stroke.

    Respiratory Signs

    • A person experiencing heat stroke will have rapid and shallow breathing, and may have difficulty breathing in general.

    Other Signs

    • Heat stroke can also cause symptoms of dizziness, irritability and confusion. The person may lose consciousness, and headache and nausea can also occur.

    Treatment

    • If you see these signs of heat stroke, move the person out of the sun, call for an ambulance immediately and do all you can to lower his body temperature.
