How to Prevent Sunburn

Sunburn is not only annoying and painful, but can lead to the development of skin cancers. Protecting your skin from the sun is relatively easy, yet also frequently forgotten. Aside from the risk of skin cancer, sunburn can also cause permanent skin damage and severe dehydration. Protect yourself and your loved ones with some simple everyday health habits.

      Do not be fooled by the sun. The damaging rays of the sun can attack your skin even on those dark, dreary and cloudy days of summer. Always assume that you can have sun damage and take the appropriate precautions.

      Stay hydrated. Dehydrated and frail skin will burn more easily. Keeping hydrated will make you feel better in the heat and help protect yourself from sun damage.

      Choose and use a sun block with an SPF of 15 or greater daily. Certain sun blocks now contain some light tanning elements which may help you obtain a "suntan" without the sun burning your skin. Apply the sun block to all exposed areas and under very light (non-sun blocking) clothing. Examine the SPF chart as a general guideline for SPF use and your skin tone.

      Review any medications that you are currently taking with your health care provider. Many medications, including most antibiotics, can lead to increased sun-sensitivity. Knowledge is power and you need to be informed.
