What is hematochromotosis?
Hematochromatosis, also known as iron overload disorder, is a genetic condition in which the body absorbs too much iron from food. The excess iron is stored in the liver, heart, pancreas, and other organs, which can damage these organs and lead to serious health problems. Hematochromatosis is usually diagnosed with a blood test, and it can be treated with phlebotomy, which is a procedure in which blood is removed from the body. In severe cases, a liver transplant may be necessary.
