How long do fibroids bleed?
Fibroids do not directly cause bleeding. Heavy or prolonged bleeding is associated with dysfunctional uterine bleeding, which is a common symptom of uterine fibroids. Dysfunction uterine bleeding patterns that are common with uterine fibroids include:
* Menorrhagia: This is abnormally heavy bleeding during a woman's menstrual period. It may involve passing large clots and soaking through a sanitary napkin or tampon every hour or two.
* Metrorrhagia: This is unexpected or irregular vaginal bleeding between menstrual periods.
* Postmenopausal bleeding: This is any vaginal bleeding that occurs after a woman has gone through menopause.
The duration and severity of bleeding with fibroids can vary from woman to woman and may also depend on the size, number, and location of the fibroids within the uterus. Some women with fibroids may experience occasional heavy or prolonged bleeding, while others may have more frequent and severe bleeding. Bleeding patterns can also change over time, and some women may have periods of heavy bleeding followed by periods of normal or light bleeding.
