What is haematosis?

Hematosis refers to the process of oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide release that occurs in the lungs during respiration. It involves the exchange of respiratory gases between the air in the lungs and the blood in the capillaries surrounding the alveoli. Oxygen from the inhaled air diffuses across the thin alveolar walls into the bloodstream, while carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism, diffuses out of the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled. The purpose of hematosis is to oxygenate the blood and remove waste gases, ensuring the efficient functioning of body tissues.
