How to Manage Hep C

Your liver is an organ responsible for fighting infections, removing waste from your blood, and many other important duties. When you develop hepatitis C, as a result of the hep C virus, your liver will become inflamed. Over time, the inflammation of your virus can cause the organ to shut down. It is important to manage your condition to prevent the development of chronic hep C, which can lead to cirrhosis of your liver. Management of your condition will also require lifestyle changes to keep your liver healthy.

Instructions

  1. Get Vaccinated

    • 1

Get vaccinated against other hepatitis viruses, such as hep A and hep B. According to the Mayo Clinic, it is important to receive these vaccines to prevent further damage to your liver if you were to contract the other hep viruses. Getting vaccinated can also prevent the hindering of your hep C treatments.

    • 2

Take any anti-viral medications as prescribed by your physician if you have chronic hep C. You will need to take a combination treatment, which includes peginterferon and ribavirin.

    • 3

Take your medications as scheduled. Peginterferon is administered by shots and ribavirin is given orally. According to the National Digestive Disease Information Clearinghouse, treatments can last for up to 48 weeks.

    • 4

Tell your doctor if you have any side effects as a result of your medication. Quit taking medications if you experience side effects. Side effects include fatigue, depression and flu-like symptoms, such as fever and muscle aches.

    Do's & Dont's

    • 5

Don't drink excessive amounts of alcohol (more than two drinks a day). Alcohol can advance liver disease.

    • 6

Don't take over-the-counter medications, such as Tylenol, that may contribute to the damage of your liver. Speak with your physician about what types of medications this includes.

    • 7

Begin to eat healthier. Eat more fruits and vegetables. A healthier diet can help your body feel less fatigues as a result of the disease.

    • 8

Start exercising to combat against the effects of the disease. Having hep C can make you emotional, and including up to 30 minutes of daily exercise can ward off feelings of anxiety and possible depression from the disease.

    • 9

Find a support group within your community. You can also ask your nurse or physician to help you choose a support group. If you need to find a local support group, the American Liver Foundation can find one nearest to your city.

    • 10

Tell your family and friends of your condition. Be honest, especially if you're in a relationship.
