How is Hepatitis B Transferred?
Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It is a serious disease that can lead to liver damage, liver failure, and even death. HBV is spread through contact with infected blood, semen, or other body fluids. This can happen through:
* Unprotected sex: Having unprotected sex with an infected person is the most common way to get hepatitis B.
* Sharing needles: Sharing needles or other drug paraphernalia with an infected person can also spread HBV.
* Blood transfusions: Before blood is donated, it is screened for HBV. However, in the past, some people who received blood transfusions were infected with HBV.
* Organ transplants: People who receive organ transplants may also be infected with HBV if the donor organ is infected.
* Birth: Babies can be infected with HBV during childbirth if their mother is infected.
HBV is not spread through casual contact, such as touching, hugging, or sharing food or drinks.
There is a vaccine available to prevent HBV infection. The vaccine is safe and effective, and it is recommended for all newborns, children, and adults who are at risk of infection.
