Do Texas inmates receive treatment for Hepatitis C while in prison?
As of 2023, Texas inmates do not receive treatment for Hepatitis C while in prison. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) currently does not have a program in place to provide Hepatitis C treatment to inmates, despite the fact that Hepatitis C is a highly prevalent and potentially deadly disease. In 2018, the Texas Legislature passed a bill that would have required the TDCJ to provide Hepatitis C treatment to inmates, but the bill was vetoed by then-Governor Greg Abbott. As a result, Texas remains one of the few states in the United States that does not provide Hepatitis C treatment to prisoners.
