What is sulfame for?

Sulfamethoxazole - trimethoprim (Bactrim, Septra), in a fixed combination, is used to treat or prevent uncomplicated urinary tract infections, otitis media, shigellosis, traveler's diarrhea (caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli), Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia (PCP) prophylaxis or treatment for those who are allergic to penicillin, nocardiosis, and brucellosis, among other infections. (Note: TMP-SMX is not FDA-approved for the treatment of shigellosis in patients < 2 months of age or for the treatment of traveler's diarrhea in patients < 12 years of age.) Because TMP-SMX can cause kernicterus, it is contraindicated in infants ≤ 2 months (≤8 weeks)
