That is why it is important to see a doctor if you have a prolonged illness or infection that doesn't seem to be getting better. Finally, some medications can alter Liver function temporarily. Any one taking prescription drugs for a prolonged period of time should have routine blood tests. The Liver metabolizes any alcohol or drugs that pass through the body. Normally, when the medication is reduced or discontinued the Liver will return to its normal state. The Liver has an excellent ability to repair itself. It take several years to develop Liver disease or Liver damage. Many times their are no symptoms until the disease progesses.
