1
Decide whether you need a hepatitis B test. Hepatitis B can be transmitted through sexual contact and contact with infected blood. Adults should be tested if they have ever had unprotected sex with multiple partners or shared needles while using drugs.
-
2
Expect to have a hepatitis B test during the first few weeks of your pregnancy. Your doctor will usually order this as part of your routine exams.
-
3
Speak to your doctor if you believe you or someone in your family has been exposed to hepatitis B, which can be easily transmitted between family members who live together. You may also wish to be tested if you or a family member recently traveled to a region where hepatitis B is widespread.
-
4
Have a blood test to look for the hepatitis B virus. Your doctor will perform a series of tests to indicate whether the virus is present or you have immunity due to a prior infection.
-
5
Check your liver. After a hepatitis B diagnosis, your doctor will test the health of your liver to see whether you are at risk for cancer or have cirrhosis (scarring of the liver).
-
6
Ask your doctor whether you are contagious. An e-antigen test can check to see how much of the hepatitis B virus you have in your blood. If you have lower levels, you are less likely to be able to spread the infection.
