  Consult your doctor. Prior to using any sort of topical solution as a treatment for herpes, you should consult your doctor. He may have a better method of treatment for your particular case.

  Apply the DMSO solution to the affected area as soon as you begin to experience an outbreak.

  Continue to use the topical solution once a day for 3 days.

  Stop applying the solution to the affected area after the 3 days are up. You'll want to wait another month before applying it to your skin again.

  Use the DMSO solution for 3 days each month for no more than 5 months, according to the manufacturer, following the same application process. Typically, you'll use the solution for only 3 days for 3 consecutive months.
