What causes herpes virus?

The herpes virus is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of HSV: HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 is the virus that usually causes oral herpes, or cold sores, while HSV-2 is the virus that usually causes genital herpes. The herpes virus is spread through contact with an infected person's saliva or skin lesions. It can also be spread through sharing personal items, such as razors or towels. When infected, herpes usually stays in the nerve cells of your body. There is no cure for herpes, but there are treatments that can help control the symptoms.
