What causes herpes?
Herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two main types of HSV: HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 usually causes oral herpes, also known as cold sores or fever blisters. HSV-2 usually causes genital herpes, but it can also cause oral herpes.
HSV is a contagious virus that is spread through close contact with someone who is infected. The virus can be spread through kissing, sex, or sharing personal items, such as towels or razors. HSV can also be spread from a mother to her baby during childbirth.
Once a person is infected with HSV, the virus stays in their body for life. There is no cure for HSV, but there are treatments that can help to reduce the symptoms.
