What does herpes look like when they start?
The initial outbreak of herpes typically occurs within 2 to 20 days after exposure to the virus. The first signs and symptoms of herpes may include:
- Small, painful blisters: These typically appear on the genitals, buttocks, or thighs, but they can also occur on other parts of the body, such as the mouth, face, or fingers. The blisters may be filled with clear fluid or pus.
- Itching, burning, or tingling sensation: This may occur in the area where the blisters will develop.
- Fever: A low-grade fever may accompany the initial outbreak of herpes.
- Muscle aches: These may also accompany the initial outbreak of herpes.
- Swollen lymph nodes: The lymph nodes in the groin or under the arms may become swollen and tender.
The initial outbreak of herpes can be very painful and last for several weeks. However, subsequent outbreaks are typically less severe and shorter in duration.
