Can you catch herpes by living with someone that has it?
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) are two common viruses that can cause oral and genital herpes. Both HSV-1 and HSV-2 can be spread through close contact with an infected person, such as through kissing, sharing towels or utensils, or having unprotected sex.
It is possible to get herpes by living with someone who has it, but the risk is low if you take precautions to protect yourself. The best way to protect yourself from getting herpes from someone you live with is to:
* Avoid kissing or sharing personal items, such as utensils, towels, or razors.
* Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially after coming into contact with the person's saliva or genital area.
* Use condoms during sex, even oral sex.
* Get vaccinated against HSV-2. There is no vaccine available to prevent HSV-1, but the vaccine for HSV-2 can reduce your risk of getting this type of herpes.
If you think you may have been exposed to herpes, see your doctor right away. There is no cure for herpes, but there are treatments that can help to relieve symptoms and reduce the risk of spreading the virus to others.
