- Pain, itching, or burning in the mouth.

Herpes can also cause more serious complications, such as:
- Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain)
- Meningitis (inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord)
- Herpes keratitis (inflammation of the cornea, the clear outer layer of the eye)
- Neonatal herpes (infection in a newborn baby)
