What is used to treat SSSS?

Treatment of severe or widespread cases usually involves intravenous antibiotics and hospitalization. Some cases may respond to oral antibiotics. Antibiotics active against gram-positive bacteria, such as [cephalosporins](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cephalosporin) (e.g., [cefazolin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceftriaxone), [ceftriaxone](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceftriaxone)), [vancomycin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vancomycin), [clindamycin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clindamycin) or [trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Co-trimoxazole), are typically chosen. [Penicillins](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penicillin) are generally not used because of high incidence of resistance. In very severe cases [immunoglobulin therapy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immunoglobulin_therapy) is used. Debridement of affected skin may be required, especially in cases where the [epidermis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epidermis) has begun to slough away (peel) from the underlying tissues.
