1
Take anti-viral medications such as Valtrex, Zovirax or Famvir. These medications can lessen the severity of symptoms during an active outbreak. Follow all your doctor's instructions regarding dosages and any other pertinent information.
-
2
Avoid tight underwear made from synthetic fabrics. Wearing cotton underwear that fits loosely will help avoid aggravating the sores; this will reduce pain and itching, and speed healing. Also avoid tight pants.
-
3
Use over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol and aspirin as directed on the product label.
-
4
Apply ice or cold packs directly to the sores.
-
5
Wash the genital area with one tablespoon of salt mixed with 2½ cups of water. This will ease pain and speed drying of the sores.
