Relief From Cold Sores While Pregnant
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a common condition in adults that results in sores on the skin. HSV-1 is the strain of the disease that causes facial sores, also known as cold sores. These sores may be painful and can spread to your baby through direct contact. Fortunately, there are treatments and methods to find relief from cold sores during and after pregnancy.-
Anti-viral Therapy
-
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends the use of anti-viral medications for HSV infections in pregnant women. Anti-viral medications, such as valacyclovir, acyclovir and famciclovir, are prescription treatments that are safe for use while pregnant. These medications shorten the duration of cold sore outbreaks and virus shedding. They also selectively inhibit viral replication, which means they specifically target HSV-infected cells. Consult your doctor to determine which anti-viral is best for your cold sore relief and HSV treatment during pregnancy.
Over-the-Counter Treatment
-
Over-the-counter topical treatments provide immediate, but temporary, cold sore symptom relief to pregnant sufferers. Applying these creams and ointments to lesions and affected areas reduce the duration of cold sores. These treatments also limit associated discomfort. Apply them several times per day as needed and as directed. There are no reported dangers for pregnant women using these treatments, but you should consult your doctor before using any topical cold sore relief product regardless.
Neonatal Herpes Risks and Prevention
-
Most women who have experienced cold sores before pregnancy have developed HSV antibodies. These mothers are not likely to spread HSV to their babies, which may cause neonatal herpes, a potentially life-threatening condition. However, mothers who have their first HSV outbreaks during pregnancy may not develop these antibodies in time to protect their babies. If this is the case, your doctor may recommend an antiviral medication among other prenatal care measures.
