How to Handle a Cold Sore

Cold sores can appear at the worst times and usually when you are most stressed. They are red blisters that pop and ooze and are caused by the Herpes (HSV-1) virus. Once you have a blister, it will last about a week or two. The sores are painful and embarrassing and sometimes burn and itch. With a little knowledge, however, you can shorten the outbreak and make it more tolerable.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap some ice in a towel and apply it to the area as soon as you feel the cold sore coming on. Do this for 10 minutes every hour. This will partially kill the blister that is trying to form. Also apply ice after formation to alleviate pain and keep the blister cool.

    • 2

Take a pain killer such as acetaminophen to help with the pain and reduce inflammation once the blister appears.

    • 3

Wash your hands and apply lip balm to the area to keep it moist and avoid cracking. Also apply antibiotic ointment to stave off infection.

    • 4

Avoid eating acidic or spicy foods as they will irritate the area.

    • 5

Ask your doctor for a prescription medication or use an over-the-counter medication to shorten the healing time of the sore.
