Make a paste of baking soda and warm water and apply it to the cold sore with a cotton swab to help ease the pain. The mixture can also be used as a mouth rinse. You should apply this mixture a few times a day if possible.

Use over-the-counter products such as Abreva, Anbesol or Orajel. With a cotton swab, apply the product to the cold sore a few times a day. This will help ease the pain, redness and swelling. The cold sore should disappear within a week to 10 days.
