Herpes in Babies
Herpes in babies, known as neonatal herpes, is caused by the herpes simplex virus--often transmitted by the mother during the time of delivery--and though there is no actual cure for the herpes, treatment is available to reduce the effects of the disease and prevent further damage.-
Herpes in Babies
-
Herpes in human babies is medically described as neonatal herpes and is caused due to the human herpes virus also known as herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Types
-
Two kinds of viruses cause herpes in newborns: HSV1 and, more commonly, HSV2.
Symptoms
-
Neonatal herpes causes skin, eye or mouth infection. It could also cause damage to the central nervous system and other internal organs. Mental retardation or even death can occur in some cases.
Treatment
-
The treatment for this neonatal herpes doesn't not actually cure the disease, but it does alleviate the symptoms. As such, quick treatment is essential.
Medication
-
One of the most commonly used antiviral drugs used to treat this condition is acyclovir. It is usually injected into the body of the newborn.
Medication is normally administered only if an infection has been suspected, a lab test has provided a positive test for infection or if the mother had genital herpes at the time of delivery.
