Herpes Whitlow Symptoms

Herpes whitlow is also known as herpetic whitlow, finger herpes, hand herpes or digital herpes simplex. Herpes whitlow is a viral infection that is caused by the herpes simplex virus.
  1. Locations

    • Herpes whitlow is most commonly found on the fingers. On rare occasions, it can be found on the toes or near the cuticle of the nail.

    Blisters

    • Fluid-filled blisters may be found in clusters on the infected area. The blisters will eventually burst and scab over, which will lead to healing.

    Skin Symptoms

    • The infected area will likely become red and swollen, tender, and may burn or tingle. There may be red lines extending out from the affected area.

    Other Symptoms

    • Herpes whitlow can cause a fever and an overall feeling of malaise. Swollen lymph glands are also a possible symptom.

    Risk Factors

    • Health care providers are at risk of contracting herpes whitlow because they may come in contact with secretions from infected patients. If you are infected or come in to contact with someone who is infected with herpes simplex virus 1 or 2, you have a higher risk of contracting herpes whitlow.
