Home Remedy for Herpes

Herpes is a viral condition that generally involves an outbreak of cold sores around the mouth or on the lips and, in some forms, in the genital area. The condition can lead to the formation of highly infectious blisters, which typically take weeks to heal. While conventional treatments exist to combat herpes in all its forms, according to the Mayo Clinic and the Herbal Remedies Info website, several home remedies also exist--including taking echinacea, applying a goldenseal herbal paste and using aloe vera gel.
  1. Echinacea

    • One method to avoid herpes altogether is to make the herb echinacea a regular part of your life. Echinacea is a natural boost and strengthens the immune system. Particularly if you are prone to herpes, you can take echinacea on a daily basis. The herb is available as a tincture (one-quarter teaspoon three times a day), a pill (two pills, three times a day), and a tea (three cups per day). You can obtain the herb from any herbal store.

    Goldenseal

    • Try making a goldenseal paste, then applying it to your herpes sores. To make the paste, combine one part goldenseal powder, one part echinacea root powder and one part black walnut hull powder. Mix these herbs---available at any herbal store---then add a few drops of lemon balm tincture. Apply this anti-herpes paste to the affected area daily for a powerful soothing and healing effect.

    Aloe Vera

    • Another natural soother and healer, aloe vera is made from the leaves and pulp of the plant of the same name. It has been used for centuries in various parts of the world to treat burns, skin infections, wounds and other skin conditions. As such, it is a natural home remedy for herpes. Aloe vera, typically available in most pharmacies and herbal stores, can come in the form of a gel, which may be rubbed into the affected area on a daily basis to sooth and heal.
