Home Remedy for a Herpes Sore

There are two types of herpes sores. Type I Herpes generally causes cold sores, or fever blisters, although it can on occasion cause genital herpes and related outbreaks. Type II Herpes generally causes genital herpes, with blisters forming on the genitals and opening to become painful sores.
  1. Cold Sore Remedies

    • Cold sores or fever blisters caused by herpes generally last between seven and ten days. There are a number of different home remedies that may shorten the life cycle of a cold sore and/or minimize the spread of the sores. Aloe vera plant extracts and lemon balm can help prevent cold sores from blistering and spreading. These remedies should be used as soon as the cold sore appears in order to be effective. Holding a warm teabag on the sore as soon as it appears can also prevent it from spreading. Finally, you can apply an ice cube four times daily for 30 to 60 minutes to help the sore disappear faster.

    Genital Herpes Remedies

    • Most home remedies for genital herpes sores focus on granting relief from the pain of an outbreak. An ice pack or a warm non-herbal tea bag can be held to the genital area to relieve pain. Aloe vera extracts or Watkins Medical ointment may relieve pain, and possibly shorten an outbreak. Warm baths may provide pain relief. To further minimize discomfort, wear loose clothing, wash your hands frequently, and keep the sores clean.

    Supplements

    • Although the claims are not substantiated by medical professionals, Health Guide suggests that taking certain vitamin supplements can help prevent herpes outbreaks. Recommendations include the probiotic acidophilus, vitamins C and E, and zinc.

    Non-Prescription Drugs

    • Some over-the-counter drugs can help with symptoms or pain. A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication like Tyenol or Ibuprofen may help to relieve pain associated. Apply benzoyl peroxide creams to cold sores to help them heal quicker and to prevent blistering.

    Prevention

    • Avoiding stress is an important step towards minimizing outbreaks. Keeping the immune system strong, by taking steps to avoid colds and other viruses, is also helpful. There is some speculation that caffeine has properties which fight the herpes virus, but this is supported only by anecdotal evidence. Sun exposure can trigger an outbreak of cold sores, so use chapstick and sunscreen.
