Folk Remedies for Herpes on the Lips
Cold sores form around the lips, as a result of the herpes simplex virus. These can be painful, itchy lesions that cause a great deal of discomfort and embarrassment to those infected. While there is no cure for the virus itself, there are remedies for herpes on the lips that have been proven to help alleviate the sore and your discomfort.-
Ice
-
Ice helps to reduce inflammation in a cold sore. Therefore, applying a cube to the sore every hour can prevent the promotion of the lesion and help it heal faster. Avoid using ice packs, as their frequent use helps the spread of the Herpes virus.
Alcohol
-
Ethyl alcohol is one of the common folk remedies for herpes on the lips. It can be applied a few times throughout the day to help dry out the sore, speeding up the healing process. Its sterilizing properties will also help keep the blister clean, preventing the spread of the virus.
Lysine
-
Lysine is an element found naturally in dairy products and potatoes, and is helpful for those with oral herpes. 2,000 to 3,000 milligrams of the amino acid should be consumed each day to help prevent future outbreaks, especially for those who experience three or more cold sores on a yearly basis. Double up on the amount of lysine you intake when you begin to feel the itching and burning that signals a cold sore is about to form. This can prevent the lesion from occurring, or at minimum reduce the time it is apparent.
Leave it Alone
-
For small cold sores that do not cause pain and discomfort, the best remedy is to just keep it clean and dry. In some cases, hygiene is the only thing needed to properly treat herpes on the lips. Wash the affected area daily with a gentle facial cleanser and warm water. Avoid brushing your teeth while the sore is present, as toothpaste can irritate the blemish. Also, your toothbrush can harbor the virus, which will promote its spreading and worsen the problem.
