Common Symptoms of Herpes
Herpes can be caused by two viruses, the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) Type 1 & 2. Type 1 typically affects the mouth, while Type 2 affects the genitals. However, each can cause symptoms at either location. Therefore, there are common symptoms among the two, and it may be hard to decipher which form of the virus you have been infected with. It's important to learn the common symptoms of herpes first, then you can visit your doctor to determine the kind and how to treat the problem.-
Cold Sores / Fever Blisters
-
Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, are the most common symptom of the Type 1 Herpes virus. These are a group of small blisters that form on and around the mouth. The area around these sores is generally red and swollen, and some soreness may be felt. These blisters can burst and excrete a clear liquid. They then typically scab over and heal within a week. If treated with ointments, they may clear up sooner.
Blisters on Gentials
-
Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 is usually responsible for the small, painful cluster of blisters that appear on the genitals, which makes it known as "genital herpes." These blemishes are similar to cold sores, but they appear around the genitalia of those infected--including the penis, vagina, anus, buttocks, and thighs. They work similar to cold sores, breaking open and scabbing over before they heal.
Small Rash Around Genitals
-
Sometimes a rash can form around the genitals of those suffering from Herpes. The redness may be accompanied by small red bumps that resemble pimples. This can sometimes be mistaken as heat rash or razor burn. However, if it is recurring, it can mean the person is infected with either type of HSV.
Flu-like Symptoms
-
It is possible to contract symptoms resembling those of the flu during a person's initial Herpes outbreak. These include body aches, fever, swollen glands, and headaches. They typically only occur in the first infection, but they can sometimes reappear with subsequent outbreaks.
Painful Urination
-
The Herpes virus can infect the urinary tract, which can cause pain or burning during urination. It can also cause discomfort when acidic urine passes over open blisters. Hygiene is very important when open sores are present. Be sure to wipe properly. Clean the area daily.
Vaginal Discharge
-
Some women experience a change in their vaginal discharge during a Herpes infection. A change in the consistency, color or smell can be a sign that of a Herpes outbreak.
