Remedies for Cold Sores With Vinegar
According to the Herpes Viruses Association, about six in every 10 people carry the herpes simplex virus, which causes cold sores. Though there are many commercial treatments available, a common household ingredient, apple cider vinegar, has been found effective in the treatment and prevention of cold sores.-
Treating Existing Cold Sores
-
To treat an existing cold sore with apple cider vinegar, pour a few drops on a cotton ball and apply to the affected area several times per day. Applying the vinegar will lessen the cold sore pain and duration. Apple cider vinegar should not be applied to open sores, as it is quite acidic and may cause a burning sensation.
Increasing Potency
-
Lemon juice is also beneficial in fighting cold sores. To increase the potency of apple cider vinegar, mix it with equal parts lemon juice and apply. Like apple cider vinegar, lemon juice is not recommended for open cold sores.
Cold Sore Prevention
-
Apple cider vinegar also acts as a cold sore prevention method. Add a tablespoon of vinegar to facial lotion or toner for topical application. Apple cider vinegar can also be taken orally. The vinegar is acidic and unpalatable to some, so it's wise to start off slowly by drinking one or two teaspoons daily. Mix with water or food if the taste is too strong for you.
