1
Look at the possible body parts that genital herpes can affect. In a woman, herpes might appear on the labia, vagina and cervix. For men, genital herpes can appear on the scrotum and penis. For men and women, herpes might appear around their anus, on their buttocks and thighs. It's also possible for herpes to show up on the eyes, tongue, mouth, gums, lips and fingers of both males and females.

2
Think about the days leading up to the appearance of the small red bumps. Did you feel a tingling or burning sensation in that area? Those sensations are sometimes present when herpes becomes active.
-
3
Watch the development of the blisters. Genital herpes blisters will break open and leave painful ulcers behind. The ulcers heal after one or two weeks.
-
4
Watch out for other symptoms that sometimes accompany genital herpes, like painful urination or vaginal discharge. Decreased appetite and muscle aches in the lower back are other symptoms associated with herpes.
