How to Treat Mild Hypertension With Minipress

HIgh blood pressure is a condition characterized by a high amount of tension in the blood vessels. These blood vessels or arteries, carry blood from the heart through the body to the organs and tissue. A normal blood pressure is under 120/80. A blood pressure between 120/80 and 140/90 is considered "pre-hypertensive" and high blood pressure occurs with readings over 140/90. Minipress (prazosin hydrochloride) is a medication used to control high blood pressure and is used alone or in combination with other blood pressure medications. It is in a class of medications called alpha blockers. It works by relaxing the tension in the blood vessels and increasing blood flow to the tissue and organs.

  1. How to Take Minipress

    • 1

Talk to your doctor. Before starting Minipress discuss all other medications and health problems with your doctor to avoid any adverse reactions.

    • 2

Take Minipress as prescribed. Minipress is usually taken in divided doses starting with as little as 1 mg two to three times a day, increasing gradually to a total of 20 mg a day in divided doses. Starting with a low dose can help to minimize some of the side effects of blood pressure medication. If you miss a dose take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it is close to the next dose, do not double dose. Minipress can be taken with or without food, but take it at the same time each day.

    • 3

Allow time for Minipress to work. Blood pressure medication does not work immediately, but takes several weeks to have the desired effect.

    • 4

Do not stop taking your medication. High blood pressure is controlled, not cured, by taking medication. It is necessary to continue to take Minipress even when you feel better. Follow your doctor's instructions for medication, diet and exercise to control your blood pressure.

    • 5

Report side effects to your doctor. The possible side effects of Minipress are headache, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, swelling, low energy, rapid heart rate and fainting with position changes. The side effects are more likely if you drink alcohol, take other blood pressure medication along with Minipress or are exposed to excessive heat. Call your doctor if you have any questions or concerns after starting Minipress.
