Bistolic Side Effects

Bystolic is a prescription medication that is used for the treatment of hypertension, otherwise known as high blood pressure. The medicine is classified as being a beta blocker, and helps to lower blood pressure, decrease the pulse and ease the strain that is put onto the heart. As with any type of medicine, there are possible side effects that are associated with Bystolic.
  1. Minor Side Effects

    • There are some relatively common side effects of Bystolic that are usually minor, due to the fact that they tend to subside as the body gets used to the medicine. However, if the side effects do not wane, or if they worsen, it might be necessary to notify a doctor. These side effects include exhaustion, headache, insomnia, diarrhea, stomachache and nausea.

    Severe Side Effects

    • Severe side effects are also a possibility with Bystolic. In such cases, it is vital to get emergency medical assistance as soon as possible. These severe effects include swelling of the feet or the ankles; feelings of cold or numbness of the feet or the hands; uneven, slow heartbeats; and shortness of breath (even when you haven't exerted yourself much physically).

    Allergic Reactions

    • Allergic reactions are also considered to be potentially dangerous side effects of Bystolic. In situations of allergic reaction, medical attention must be received immediately. Some signs of allergic reaction to Bystolic are swelling of the tongue, throat, lips or face; problems with breathing; and breaking out into hives.

    Drug Interactions

    • Drug interactions with Bystolic can occur whenever more than one medication is taken at the same time. These interactions could lead to increased or decreased effectiveness of one or both of the medicines that are involved. Some medications that could lead to drug interactions with Bystolic are guanethidine, digitalis, reserpine, heart medicines (such as verapamil and nifedipine), antidepressants (such as paroxetine and fluoxetine), heart rhythm medication (such as propafenone and amiodarone) and beta blockers (bisoprolol and sotalol).

    Overdose

    • If you think you have taken too much Bystolic, you must immediately get medical help. Some signs of Bystolic overdose include difficulty breathing, throwing up, dizziness, slow heart rate, lightheadedness, and feeling like you are going to faint.
